What is a favicon?
A favicon is the small icon that appears in a browser tab, in bookmarks and in search results next to your site name. A phone also uses a larger version when someone saves your site to their home screen. A site without one shows a blank page icon, which looks unfinished.
A complete set has a favicon.ico for older browsers, PNG files at 16, 32 and 48 pixels for tabs, a 180 pixel Apple touch icon, and 192 and 512 pixel icons for Android and installed web apps. This tool makes all of them from one picture.
How to make a favicon
- Choose a square logo or icon, ideally 512 x 512 pixels or more.
- Pick a shape (square, rounded or circle), the space around the picture and, if you like, a background colour.
- Download the zip and put its files in the root folder of your website.
- Paste the lines shown under the preview inside the head of your page.
Questions people ask
What size should a favicon be?
Start from a square picture of at least 512 x 512 pixels. The tool makes the small sizes from it: 16, 32 and 48 for the browser, 180 for Apple devices and 192 and 512 for Android.
Do I still need favicon.ico?
It is good to have: some tools and older browsers still ask for it. The zip includes one with the 16, 32 and 48 pixel icons inside.
Can the favicon have a see-through background?
Yes, if your picture has one. Leave Fill the background off. Apple icons are shown on a coloured square, so for the Apple icon a filled background looks better.
Why does my new favicon not show yet?
Browsers keep favicons for a long time. Reload with the cache cleared, or open the site in a private window to check it.
